Issue 18: sâkihisotân

CA$0.00

Issue 18 sâkihisotân features poetry, prose and visual art by Indigenous creators expressing pain, loss, grief, recovery, joy, and hope. This issue embraces creative expression as an authentic channel of Indigenous language reclamation and revitalization. We celebrate the work of Indigenous artists at all levels of language learning and reclamation and the stories they tell through art.

In this issue, you’ll find stories of how our relationships with language are bound up in family and memory: in the languages we grew up speaking and those we didn’t, in the words we are learning to find again, and in the languages spoken by the people we love. There is no single way to come to a language, or to make art in it.

sâkihisotân, from nêhiyawêwin, means “let’s love ourselves.” The title was chosen by guest editors and cousins Corinne Riedel (Métis) and Naomi McIlwraith (Cree-Métis), who curated the issue.

This issue was sponsored by the Supporting Indigenous Language Revitalization (SILR) initiative at the University of Alberta. With their support, the digital edition is available to download for free.
